Pink Shirt Day and a Dance for Tolerance
The International Day of Pink Shirts, dedicated to combating peer bullying, was marked in Croatia on February 25. On this occasion, Kolajna ljubavi organized a special event at the Tuškanac Center for Education, with the aim of encouraging children to reflect on the importance of friendship, mutual respect and non-violence among peers.
Instead of wearing pink shirts, the children and volunteers of Kolajna ljubavi symbolically danced with pink umbrellas. The opened umbrellas served as a symbol of protection and support, a reminder that every child deserves a safe space where they can grow, learn and feel accepted.
At the beginning of the event, the children took part in a creative workshop decorating the umbrellas. They were told that the color pink represents friendship, support and the courage to be kind to one another. The children freely chose their motifs and the umbrellas were soon decorated with hearts, suns, the names of family members and friends and other positive images that encourage a sense of togetherness, cooperation, and support among children.
Through conversation and drawing, the children spontaneously shared stories about their friends and the people who are important to them, which contributed to a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Although each child had their own umbrella, they happily helped one another, exchanged ideas and often decorated their umbrellas together. Throughout the activity, they were cheerful, creative, and highly engaged.
Dancing Together Against Bullying
The highlight of the event was a shared dance with the painted pink umbrellas, symbolically showing that peer violence can be challenged through unity, cooperation, and mutual respect.
In residential homes and educational institutions, the issue of peer bullying is particularly important. The goal of this activity was therefore to raise awareness among children about the importance of tolerance and respect for others.
The event was designed and carried out by the dedicated volunteers of Kolajna ljubavi, whose effort, creativity, and warmth created a welcoming environment where children could freely express themselves and feel the strength of the community.
When Kolajna volunteers, sometimes all it takes is an umbrella, a little color, and a lot of goodwill to send a powerful message: there is no place for bullying among children!
