Restoring the Well in Podbila – Preserving Heritage

As part of the “Bridges of Cultural and Sports Heritage project”, conducted within the framework of the Cross-Border Cooperation Program between the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and funded by the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds of the Republic of Croatia, the restoration of a well in Podbila was successfully completed.

Wells have historically played an essential role, particularly in rural communities. Beyond serving as a source of water, they were gathering places to exchange news and make social bonds. Women, in particular, used their daily walks to fetch water as an opportunity for conversation and fellowship. Wells symbolize community and tradition and, in some cultures, hold spiritual significance.

Despite modernization and changing lifestyles, wells remain vital to local heritage. Their restoration and preservation are crucial for maintaining spaces where communities can gather, host events, and reflect on their history.

In collaboration with volunteers, the area around the well in Podbila was cleaned and restored, highlighting its role as part of the region’s natural heritage. This activity culminated in the event “Our Heritage is Sacred“, which emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage, fostering community spirit, promoting cooperation, and ensuring equal access for all social groups to experience and safeguard shared traditions.
