Making a Positive Impact on Life

Volunteering at St. Anthony’s Orphanage in Songea, Tanzania, was one of those experiences that leave a lasting impression and change the way we see the world, other people, and even ourselves. At 24, still growing, learning, and searching for my place in the world, I embarked on this journey with a strong desire to help others, discover a different culture, and do something that went beyond everyday responsibilities and personal needs. Yet, what I experienced there exceeded all my initial expectations.

My first encounter with the orphanage and the children was filled with mixed emotions. On the one hand, it was difficult to face the reality that many children grow up without parental care or the living conditions that we often take for granted. On the other hand, what touched me most were their smiles, openness, curiosity, and eagerness to spend time together. I quickly realized that, despite language and cultural differences, there are ways to connect that do not require many words. Sometimes, a smile, a hug, playing together, or a simple gesture of kindness was enough to create a sense of closeness.

During my volunteering experience, I had the opportunity to spend time with the children, take part in their daily activities, play with them, help them with their schoolwork, and become part of their everyday lives. These seemingly small moments turned out to be the most valuable part of my experience. I realized how much children value someone’s presence, patience, and the feeling of being seen, heard, and accepted.

This experience also encouraged me to reflect on my own life. We often focus on what we do not have, the goals we have yet to achieve, and the problems that seem overwhelming at a particular moment. My time in Tanzania helped me look at certain things from a different perspective. I began to appreciate everyday opportunities, security, family, friends, education, and the possibilities available to me much more deeply.

The moments we shared, the laughter, the play, and the genuine connections I formed with the children showed me how little it sometimes takes to brighten someone’s day. At the same time, I realized that volunteering is not only about giving our time and energy, but also about a process through which we receive so much in return. Although I arrived at the orphanage intending to help, I am leaving with the feeling that the children, their strength, and the way they welcomed me taught me far more than I had ever expected.

When I think back on my time in Tanzania, I remember not only the places I visited or the activities I took part in, but above all, the people I met and the feelings I carried home with me. This experience reminded me that we do not have to do something extraordinary to make a positive impact on someone’s life. What matters is approaching others with an open heart, showing genuine interest, and being willing to make time for someone who needs support.

For me, volunteering was not just an ordinary trip, but also a journey towards a better understanding of myself and the world around me. I returned home enriched by an experience that inspired me to become more grateful, patient, and sensitive to the needs of others. It showed me that humanity knows no borders and that genuine care for others can bring people together, regardless of their background, language, or life circumstances.

Ultimately, volunteering taught me that we cannot change the entire world, but we can try to make one person’s world a little better. That is where I see the greatest value of my experience in Songea.
