Where Joy Caught Me Off Guard
By Volunteer Nemanja
In April 2025, I spent two months volunteering at an orphanage in Tanzania, and I can easily say it was one of the most meaningful and profound experiences of my life.
The entire preparation process took several months, and only now do I realize how essential it was. Still, no amount of preparation could have readied me for the overwhelming joy, emotion, and countless smiles that greeted me there.
Working with the children was incredible — from playing, painting, jumping, and running to more serious activities like computer lessons. On top of that, you get the chance to immerse yourself in a completely different culture, way of life, and value system.
You also have the opportunity to support both the home and the organization through workshops, lectures, and various tasks, because the orphanage and the children are just one part of what Kolajna ljubavi does in Songea. Honestly, until I arrived, I couldn't fully grasp the depth and impact of their work. All of that becomes clear in this little oasis at the heart of Songea.
This experience reminded me what it feels like to be a child again - because through all the activities, games, and shared moments, you reconnect with that part of yourself and feel the joy of pure, honest childhood happiness.
Being a volunteer is truly something special, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. It’s an unforgettable journey.
